Wathen’s Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Whiskey

I dropped into one of my favorite liquor stores the other day and thought that I need to drop another Top Shelf review. After speaking with a few people I picked up this bottle of Wathen’s Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey… I picked up a few others but I will get to those later. I have had to try this several times so that I can truly get the full picture of this bourbon so that I can pass it on to you, so let us see what we have going on.

the first impressions I got from Wathen’s Single barrel is the nice golden/chestnut color as I poured it. It seems to be a little lighter than some bourbons I have had in the paste, but I know that bourbons come in a wide variety of colors. The nose delivers a strong alcohol that is shortly followed something that reminds me of salted peanuts with notes of caramel. It finishes off with some light cherry with a twist of vanilla.

When it comes to tasting notes I get that strong bourbon flavor right off the bat. Afterwards I got some of that caramel a little vanilla but not mush more. I want to say I got a little oak, but at the same time I feel like their is some mineral taste lingering with it. It is not the smoothest bourbon in the world but not the roughest either. I feel rather confused. The nose tells you one thing and your tastebuds tell you something else.

I will say that I feel you do get a wide range of things with this one. While I do not think this would get a place in my inner bourbon circle I would still place on my top shelf if slightly hiding behind another bottle. The average price for Wathen’s Single Barrel is about $45 so I cannot complain to much. I give it a 3 out of five.
